The season of Advent is a big part of the year for my family, and for many others around the world. The “Expectation” of the coming of the Christ Child. The preparation leading up to Christmas!
John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
“I am the Light of the World”
Matthew 1:21b “and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Isaiah 61:1-2 “1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; 2 To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,”
Jesus came to this earth to bring light, life, hope, love and freedom.
The redeeming of the world from sin and bondage. The coming of light into this dark world.
“I am the Light of the World”
This message was not just for the Jewish people during the time of the Bible, but for all people for all time.
Jesus came to overcome the evil that was in the world. To bring an end to the futility of life.
But we look around today and what do we see?
Our world is a troubled place these days. Wars, terrorism, starvation, poverty, homelessness, slavery, sickness….
2015 has been a challenge for my family. My brother Heath has been battling brain tumors all year long. His family has been uprooted in order to get Heath the treatment he has needed.
2015 has been a challenge for our nation. Mass shootings, racial discord, domestic terrorism, political battles.
2015 has been a challenge for our world. Syrian refugee crisis, genocide, starvation, poverty, Ebola, terrorism.
“I am the Light of the World”
2015 has also had a lot of beauty….When those who are hungry receive food….When those in poverty are given hope….When those who are sick are made well….When the homeless find a home….When those oppressed find deliverance….When those who are troubled find peace….
There is a lot of beauty still in this world! There is light, and life, and hope and love and peace available to all!
Here is a great video of the song “Light of the World” sung by Lauren Daigle:
As we wrap up 2015 and move in to 2016 what can you do to make this world a better place for those with whom you come into contact?
Have a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
